Letter from the
HoB Team:
The
HoB Dev Team would like to thank you for your interest in Heat of Battle!
We're very excited for you to play this and we look forward to seeing all
of you all in-game. Thank you for supporting us this far and making the work
we've done (and continue to do) a great success. We appreciate every post
on the forums and every time you kill one of us in-game. We can't thank you
enough for getting this mod off of the ground. Without you, the players, we
would have empty servers. So thank you all, and we hope you enjoy playing
Heat of Battle!
-The HoB Development Team

GAMEPLAY
CHANGES AND STRATEGY
This section will discuss some of the new gameplay changes made to Heat of
Battle for v.31/32 and some tips and strategies that will help make you a
better player.
NO CROSSHAIRS
One of the
first things you'll notice in Heat of Battle is that your crosshairs are missing.
This is intentional and you cannot turn them back on. Remember that you can
bind a key to "Look Down Sights", which pulls the gun up to your
face and you aim down the actual sights of the gun. Mastering each guns sights
will prove invaluable in the field.
SCORING SYSTEM
Also new to Heat of Battle is a new team scoring system. You now get
10 team points for capturing a single objective, 5 team points every two minutes
you hold an objective*, and 50 team points for capturing all the objectives
in a map and winning the round.
*You get 5 team points every complete two minutes you hold an objective.
This is not a running counter, the two minutes begin once you capture an objective.
So each objective you have is running on a different clock.
Servers also now have the option of disabling kill scores, just showing objective points (points given for helping to capture an objective) this helps promote teamplay.
MULTI-PERSON
CAPTURES
New to Heat of Battle is the introduction of multiple person captures. One
person will no longer be able to capture all the flags in a map. You will
need two or three teammates to capture some objectives. This gives more incentive
for teams to use teamwork and strategy. A good tactic is that when you see
someone on your team, stick with them and follow them around. Let them know
you are giving them back-up. Give them covering and suppressing fire as you
move. The odds of two soldiers beating a single soldier are much greater than
being alone. When you get to the cap zone, check the capture presence indicator
(see the HUD section for more detailed information on the capture presence
indicator and other HUD elements) and make sure the meter is full so that
you are capturing the objective. If you need more people, take cover and call
for backup.
OVERVIEW
MAPS
The official Heat of Battle maps have overview maps now, which you can access
in-game by pressing the "Escape" key and then clicking the "View
Map" tab. These maps show you the exact location of objectives, along
with the location of the enemy advancement. These maps are useful for planning
strategies and familiarizing yourself with the battleground. These maps also
show while maps load, giving you time to look them over and plan an attack.
CLASS LIMITS
Heat of Battle now has
class limits that can be set by the server, but default to two SMGs, two support
gunners, and one sniper. This means only two people can choose SMGs, if you
try to pick a class that is at it's limit, you will be told "Max <class>
exceeded". You will have to pick another weapon.
To help enforce class limits, Heat of Battle now also has weapon drop limits.
When you are killed your gun drops, if someone picks up your weapon it will
only have the ammo that was in the gun when you dropped it, no extra magazines
or clips. For example, if you had an M1 Garand, fired off two shots and got
killed and someone picked up your rifle they would only have six bullets.
No more. This helps make it so people can't just pick up SMGs off the ground
and offset class limits. However, don't worry, if you get your gun shot out
of your hand or drop your gun to pick up another, when you pick up your original
gun back up off the ground you will have all the ammo you had for it
REALISTIC
AMMO & GRENADE LOADOUTS
New to Heat of Battle is the introduction of realistic ammunition loadouts
for each class. No longer will rifleman carry 360 rounds. The typical American
rifleman carried around around 130 rounds, which is what you will now carry
in Heat of Battle. It is important to conserve your ammo, you are going to
need it. Shooting off your gun and pistol ammo when you spawn is pointless
and puts you at a disadvantage. If you are alive at the end of the round,
you will start the next round with the ammo you had leftover. Another incentive
to save and conserve what ammo you can. Pistol ammo has also been lowered.
Each player only has three clips for their pistol, snipers carry six.
Also, grenades are now limited. Rifleman classes will now carry two grenades, while all other classes will carry one. Using grenades tactically is a much better idea than just throwing them down a street at the beginning of a round. A good player will save his grenade(s) for when he needs them most, like clearing out the tower on Village. The player who uses grenades in the way they were meant to be used, will typically get more kills from them. Grenades are also much more powerful now and can take out three or four guys if they're bunched together, handy for stopping a capture in progress. Using grenades tactically can not only stop the enemy team in their tracks, but can help your team get a foothold in a map.
Another new thing concerning weapons and loadouts is that you can only carry one primary weapon at a time. You can no longer have a Rifle, a Thompson, and a pistol. You can carry either the rifle or the thompson, not both. You can carry two pistols though.
SHELLSHOCK
EFFECTS
Shellshock effects are new as well. When you take a lot of damage from a grenade
blast or get bashed in the head by an enemy's gun, you will get the shellshock
effect. The severity and duration of this effect depends on how much damage
you take, how heavy the gun is (if you were bashed), and, for grenades, how
close you are to the explosion. While in the shellshock effect, you will move
very slow and will be an easy target for enemies. It's a good idea to try
and get to cover as fast as possible. Also, when you get shot you'll receive
a small and short decrease in running speed. This only lasts for a very brief
amount of time, but it is enough for the enemy to get off a second shot, so
watch out!
LOCATIONAL
DAMAGE EFFECTS
If you shoot someone in the hand they will drop their gun, shoot them in the
foot and they will fall to prone. This happens rarely, but it will happen.
But don't count on it to happen all the time. A good tactic to use is if you
are low on ammo, or in the middle of reloading, while an enemy compromises
your position, pull out your pistol and try to shoot him in one of these areas,
buying you time to escape or reload your weapon. If you are shot in the hand
and drop your weapon, you can pick it back up, but you will also be an easy
target for your enemy, so be careful.
SEARCH &
DESTORY MAPS NOW BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE
Search & Destroy maps are now Heat of Battle compatible, which means if
a server switches to one of these, the map will still have all the features
of Heat of Battle. Two targets will need to be bombed by one team and defended
by the other. You will still get to respawn in waves and use all the features
of HoB. Keep in mind though that this is not officially supported and S&D
maps will not be very balanced and could cause unforseen problems. Use at
your own risk.
